Two exposures where taken with an
hand-held Canon S45 digital camera set to 2272x1704, super-fine, '24-bit color' jpeg
images with in-camera image properties set to normal for contrast,
sharpness, and saturation. The exposure meter was set to "Evaluative" and
white balance set to "AWB" [auto]. With the focus and lens aperture
locked, one exposure was taken for the foreground and one for the
sky:
These two images were than combined
using Picture Window Pro's Composite transform with a tree-line
mask in blend mode and multi-point alignment
producing the following un-enhanced 4x6 ratio cropped image:
This combined image was than enhanced
using a modified [image specific] Three Tone Range Adjustment
procedure: "Highlight Range" to optimize the contrast and brightness
of the sky, mountain, foothills, and valley clouds/haze; "Shadow Range" to
optimize the contrast and brightness of the foreground evergreen trees and barn;
and "Mid-tone Range" to optimize the contrast and brightness of the foreground
pasture to the bottom of the foot hills. This enhancement followed with
additional contrast/brightness adjustments to specific image areas [barn,
mountain, and pasture]; with Color Balance/Color Correction; and with minor
global USM sharpening [amt=25, R=2, thrsld=0] produced the following final
image:

This image also has an interesting context as it was photographed from a bus stop in the town of Ferndale, WA, population 6,000. Below is a panorama comprising of 7 image-stiched photo's with a darkened area to indicate the 'Mt Baker & Ferndale, WA' image. To the left are a bus stop sign and an up-hill housing developement and to the right of the barn is a church campus and parking lot. The main part of the town is immediately beyond the foreground trees and barn.
As of March 2006, there is a 'For Sale' for the 20 acre foreground pasture with a zoning notice for 'high density housing'. I fully expect that within a year, this pasture, trees, and barn will be replaced by apartments and multi-family housing.
