Image Comparisons resulting from a PWP equivalent 'LightZone-ToneMapper1' and '3Tone Range Adjustments' Workflows

The Tale behind the Images:

The image comparisons are the result of DL-C message board threads which are located here and here.

The starting image is LTG's 48-bit tiff image posted here [3.5MB].

A PWP3.5.0.10 equivalent workflow for 'LightZone-ToneMapper1' was determined.   In general, a 'darkening' gamma curve mask is subtractive filtered with its 'inverse gamma curve + blur' in the Filter transform where the ExposureCompensation setting determines the 'detail'.   The resulting mask is then used as the Overlay in the Composite - SoftLight transform where the Input is 'LTG's Bridge2' original image.   Amount sliders were adjusted to preferences.

Comment:   After the expansion to full range, it was observed that the sky above the bridge looked washed out.   A transparent 'one-to-one' cloning from the original image into this area was performed.   The image still seemed somewhat dull, so a 'dapple effect' was performed.   The 'dappling mask' looked like this:

The PWP 3Tone Range Adjustment Image:

Comment:   Three tone ranges were used: 65->100% [sky highlights - HSL color space]; 0->65% [shadows/midtones - HSV color space]; and 0->20% [deep shadows under bridge/water eddies - HSV color space].   Each of the tone ranges were individually adjusted to preference brightness, contrast, and saturation.
